I've also heard that if you disconnect the battery and then subsequently reconnect it, you should not touch the air-con controls for 30 minutes, whilst the system automatically initialises itself and calibrates the control linkages.
I guess that there's a chance that someone "fiiddled" with the a/c soon after your battery was connected and this may be the cause of your problem. If so (and you know the radio code), it might be worth discinnecting the battery for 30 mins, reconnecting it again, and then leaving the car alone for another 30 mins, to see if that resolves the issue.....
Don't forget that the air only comes out of the vent on top of the trip computer, with the outlet control set to "central" and the separate knob near the trip computer screen turned to on.
It's only the "slit vents" just behind the windscreen that are used when the outlet control is set to its "upper" setting.
(Just checking in case you're getting confused between the two vents...)
