I'm afraid Alfa has to take some flak for the rust. My last car (Rover) was 8 years old when I sold it and had no rust whatsoever underneath and I never waxoyled etc it. My 156 had extensive (but light) rust on the floor pan at 6 years old and needed a fair bit of mucky work to get the underneath re-rusted/protected. There is no doubt I would have had to get the welder out before it was 8 years old if it had been left. The shell may be galvanised but that doesn't help for long without decent undersealing.

I remember seeing your photos before Stratosphere. Your car was in a pretty bad way.

Sadly I do think Alfa's rust protection on the 156 wasn't as good as it could have been. The GTV's in comparison age for age rust considerably less.

Having said that there is an E Class Merc at my work from 1998, and that is as rusty as an old horseshoe, so it isn't just Alfa who have cut back on rust protection.

If they made cars that lasted forever then they would never sell any new ones..

Picking up a cheap little corsa today to run round in over the winter. So me and my mate will get stuck into the Alfa.
