Is the malarky in the manual a load of !!!!!!!!? I'm thinking it would make more sense to allow all the oil to seep back into the sump...a nightly task.
Also, why have a MAX/MIN level? How safe is runnin the car on a halfway level?
I normally check once a week with the car on a flat surface and left overnight.
It is safe to run the car between the min - max marks
But obviously, if oil is down to mid way or less then it is important to add oil as soon as possible, preferably immediately.
The minimum level is the minimum safe level before the car needs some oil. Run below the minimum and you risk oil starvation to the bearings .
The maximum level is set so that there is not excessive oil in the engine which puts extra presure on oil seals and can also pump more oil into the cylinders and ruin your catalytic convereter.
A small amount, say 250 ml over full (about 2mm on dip stick), will not cause any problems.
It is definitely more dangerous to have less oil than mimimum than to have slighly more oil than maximum.
With an Alfa it is better safe than sorry as far as oil is concerned.
