Hi carrollmark, I have had by GT JTS Selespeed for 3500 miles now and can honestly say that the selespeed gearbox is fantastic, in normal mode once you get used to it the change is smoother & quicker than a normal manual gearbox, i find that to lift slightly between 1st & 2nd gives the better change, but the rest of the changes can be done without lifting and they are just as smooth, i guess its like everything once you get used to it you dont have to think about it. nice feature when slowing at junctions the box changes dow depending on the speed of the car, and makes sure that when you come to a standstill its in 1st ready to go again. other little things if left in 1st whilst standing for a long period of time it automatically places the car in neutral & beeps to tell you, when switching off the car you must leave it in 1st, so that when you start next time it automatically selects neutral, if you put it in neutral & switch off it beeps, i suggest you just switch back to ign & select 1st, i omitted to do this a couple of times & on starting the car next time it took a few shifts up & down to get the box to select any gear, but i guess you leave it in 1st for that reason!
- bit of a waste of time really as david c quoted " City mode is useless for town/city driving, but it is great for a casual Motorway or "A" Road drive" its a bit jerky and as your speed increases & decreases during city driving the box shifts more frequently than is necessary, think i have used it twice for about 30 minutes & dont really like it, if i had wanted a fully automatic gearbox i would have bought something else.
- not for every day driving, as you dont really get the benefit until you hit 5-5500rpm, once this rpm is reached the shift is much more aggressive, and gives quite a kick, the shift is very quick as at that rpm/speed changes are a lot closer together, its great fun though.....as long as you can afford the fuel!!
The geabox is not "automatic" as some people state it is a manual with a hydrolic clutch mechanism,
overall impression once you learn to use it properly it is a great gearbox, and gives a really great drive & much safer with both hands on the wheel.
I guess that topgear & others moan about these semi automatic boxes, but thats beacuse they want to get the maximum out of the car on the test track, and want to be able to up & downshift on or past the limit, but how many of use have the opprotunity of driving on the limit every day!!
Look forward to your selespeed & dont worry about it, i think that the development since the first selespeeds has made it a more stable product
what spec & colour have you ordered?
