As Dave says: try the variator first, if its not that then next logical step is:
The lifters need charging with oil properly... Run the engine until its up to normal temperature then slowly rev evenly to 3,500 rpm over a 15 second period then let it drop to idle for a further 15 seconds (1 cycle)
Repeat the cycle up to 10 to 15 times and see if the lifters have charged with oil i.e. the noise has gone away....
Failing that, it sounds as if the shims or lobes are dished slightly and the the clatter is the loose gap uptake.
Did you soak the lifters overnight upright in a bucket of oil before refitting?
