Ok, hi everyone. I hope someone can help - we've been having a few issues with our Alfa Romeo, 147 LUSSO M-JET JTD (140).
About April time we replaced the EGR valve with a new one - fuel consumption was terrible, lots of smoke, power would suddenly go and would only return when the engine was restarted, a while later the power would go again...The new EGR seemed to fix the problem.
Then we started to get the smell of diesel through into the car, slow accelaration and fuel consumption was terrible again. No smoke. It felt like in lower gears that we had jumped 2 gears ie changing from 2nd to 3rd would feel like we had changed up into 5th gear. Then all of a sudden acceleration would kick in. Fast. Until the next gear change. Forget hills.
We changed a seal on one of the injectors, a little better but not great. we were getting a tapping sound - turned out a bolt was loose and air was escaping, hitting the bonnet. Tightened up and hoorah - car was working ok again. (I don't think its ever been better than ok so we were fine with that.)
This was last week. On Friday we drove from Lincolnshire to edinburgh. No probs. Drove round a bit up there. No probs. Came home on Sunday, lack of power was back. Changing down to 3rd/4th for going up slight hills. Couldn't touch 6th gear. I did find that if struggling in 5th, I changed to 4th and waited for the revs to slowly go over 3000 then back into 5th the power came back for a bit and I could drive along quite happily. Don't know if this was a coincidence or not.
It was happy enough to go along between 70 and 85mph, and even not too bad pulling away from the 50mph zones, but then the rev counter would start to come down. The problem wasn't consistant. At the time, pulling away in the lower gears was ok, but this might have changed since for my husband who drove it a couple of days to work this week and would have come across a few more roundabouts and junctions than I did on sunday.
(Also the digital bit on the heater on the central console had gone a bit crazy - not displaying properly. I turned it to off incase it was to do with the problem. probably not - like the rear door that doesn't shut properly and the passenger heated seat that doesn't work!
Sorry for the long post I hope it makes sense.
