GT. Brilliant tyres-and service for less
After discovering that square wheels were responsible for my noisy rear end(!) I went to see Lepsons of Gillingham - a specialist wheel and tyre warehouse. As it turns out that's rather underplaying it since they repair about 700 hundred wheels a week!!
I had bought the car on new Goodyear F1's originally which had now worn out in a very uneven way. They had also gone concave in shape. They found one front wheel had pothole damage (flattened rim) and on the rear which seemed ok at first glance, both tyres had become horrendously mishapen in depth. Very similar to when a shock absorber goes but worse. Another one had also got pothole damage, though not serious.
The car had been checked for other damage by Days and cleared. So I was gritting my teeth for a terrible bill for x4 new tyres and x2 wheels. Lepsons were brilliant. x2 repaired 18" wheels (£70) and x4 new Pirelli P Zero (£125 each, fitted balanced inc Vat). This was EASILY the best quote and option for the car and pocket considering some wanted £165 a tyre plus vat.
The result - I have done 1000 miles in a month and the car is transformed. Stable, no wandering kicking and bucking which I had always complained of before. (Q2 fitted). Grip is great and noise hugely down - though that's expected now I have round wheels again. Plus the tread pattern looks a lot better for Winter snow.
Apparently F1's have a reputation for going out of true which is one reason why the pattern got changed a bit recently.
For those who think we have Alfa to part blame - we do not. BMW wheels usually need welding when they go out of true. Unfortunately I can't claim off the Council. And the service - all done in 5 hours by arrangement. Will use again.
