Brake light bulb replacement

I have a brake light bulb out on the off-side of my 147.
I had a look in my manual and it looked a straight forward procedure...
Disconnect the connecter, loosen the mounting screw, pull the unit out of the aperture, replace bulb and reverse the procedure carried out. Ok now even with my limited level of mechanics I thought ' piece of cake'... Wrong!!
I did what it said in the manual but the unit that holds the bulbs is to large to be pulled through the aperture for me to change the bulb.
Anyone shed any light on this please?
