My 156 - probable write off
My wife had a serious crash in our Alfa 156 on Friday. Luckily she and our 2 young kids were absolutely fine, which is quite miraculous really. She was side-swiped on the M25 in the rush-hour by a left-hand drive articulated lorry (which didn't even stop - probably blissfully unaware of what he did). The lorry changed lanes without indicating, as she was level with his cab (and so in his blind spot), forcing her into 2 360 degree spins, before hitting the crash barrier. Incredible that she didn't hit anything else really. Thankfully some nice people rang 999 to give their names as witnesses to the fact that the lorry just pulled out into her and that she was blameless. Upto that point, the policeman on the scene said he might have to read her her rights, and that she might get sued by the council for the damage to the barrier!
Some other kind blokes stopped on the hard-shoulder to help her out. Whoever you were, thanks!
The car is undoubtedly a write-off. The passenger side, where the lorry impact was, is a mess, needing complete new panels. The door sill is out of shape too. She also hit the barrier whilst travelling backwards, so the boot and back panels are wrecked, and the bumper's a mess. I loved that car! But it's cargo is infinitely more precious!
If it is a write-off, I'm only expecting around £5000 from the insurance company. It's a 2 litre 156 saloon, turismo spec (CD player, alloys, metallic paint, air con) with 70,000 miles on the clock. Does anyone have any experience of this sort of thing and how much I could expect to get?
