Hey people its been a while !! but now I need your help big time. I'm about to loose my mind aswell as being really !!!!ed off at my car right now. Got into it tonight to for the first time since monday to drive to my parents house and the problem started before I even started it, when I tried to move the gear stick from side to side to make sure it was in neutral before starting i could bearly move the stick I had to push and pull really hard to get it to move . Anyway I got the car going and started my 15min drive to my folks house well all I can say is that it was the worst drive I've ever had in my car, 1st to 2nd no problem 2nd to 3rd a fcukin nightmare !!!!!! I had to push with force to the middle of the box then the same upwards to get 3rd then 3rd to 4th no problem then 4th to 5th the same problem as with 2nd to 3rd, coming down in gear is the same sort of thing except in reverse.
Now I had this problem before but the gear box just felt a bit sticky and it went away, I said it to the garage when it went in for service but "murphys law" the problem was not there the day the car went in.
So please, can someone shed some light on whats happening as I am at a loss at this stage, I am due to change the car as it is now three years old but there is no way that I can sell it the way it is, I would really appreciate any help on this one. By the time I got to my parents house I just wanted rid of the car and anyone that knows me will tell you thats not like me at all, I usually bow down and worship the ground she rolls on.
Apart from saying that its the gearbox and something has become dislodged in it and moves around and interferes in gear change It might be useful (or not as the case maybe) to know what car it is and year etc. I've seen posts here that actually say that there was a problem with a particular marque for a particular year... wealth of knowledge this place
Wish you luck... as I once felt like that about another car I had and its not a nice feeling.
Can't believe I forgot to say what car I have, she's a late 2001 147 1.6ltr (120bhp version) lusso, I took off the gear gaitor the other day and everything looked ok nothing out of place, Hoygaard you mentioned the cables in your reply, if it is the cables is this a big job ? any ideas on how much it would cost to fix if they are the problem.
thanx again guys.
Thank you all for your input will get it sorted asap, funny thing is I got into the car today not 10 mins ago and the gearshift was perfect moved freely around the gears, now i have to explain this problem to the mechanic when its not there.
Am going to bring the car to be fixed tomorrow or the next day but was wondering if you guys can put the problem into the correct terms for me so I can tell the problem and the solution, would like to say its x y z and the parts 1 2 3 will fix it,sounds funny putting it like that but you know what I mean. will bring the parts list you guys posted for me as well.thanx
hope thats doesn't sound too stupid cos when I read it back it sounds funny in my head
Just say that the cable for the side to side movement of the gearstick mechanism may have seized, and you think that changing that specific cable might sort it. The cables come as a pair, but just pretend you dont know that, and they will think you're a good customer with a great mechanical understanding. I'm a mechanic, and we're suckers for that kind of customers The key to it is; pretend you know something but not all, that'll make them feel good
i had a similar (although not as bad ) situation on sunday
the gearstick in neutral was stiff and when moved side to side stayed in the position you let it go at. took of the gaiter and squashed some of the white grease into the mechanism , when i wewnt back to car after a couple of hours i was ok again, thought maybe it was just dry but don't know now after reading this post , car is 2001 y 2.0 147 , has this been a common thing
