Hairline crack in head gasket 156 2.0 TS

Hey all,I have a 156 ts 2.0 which has started overheating. My friendly local mechanic tells me it's a small external leak in the headgasket. While I love the car to death,it's worth around a grand and I don't have a huge pool of cash to get it replaced, head skimmed etc.The heater only works on auto also,so I'm wondering if the heater matrix is involved also.
I know this will be universally frowned upon, but could one of those magic bottle sealants keep me out of trouble at least for a while?Blue devil for instance?Car doesen't owe me much at this stage and I'd rather put the money towards that 159 I've been hankering after!
Has anyone any experience of this?I've used radiator sealants in the past as an interim thing until my mechanic could take the car and never found them much use..Any thoughts?Cheers in advance..
