Looky Looky Throttle sticking open...

Just had an unpleasant experience on the way home where the throttle stayed open. I turned the engine off, waited a while and turned the ignition and the engine merrily revved it's ********* off again.

Turned the engine off again, pumped the accelerator, started up and it was fine....

Any one experienced this (it wasn't a trapped mat!), and more importantly any clues why it could have happened. Sticky cable?

Re: Throttle sticking open...

I had this happen on a 146TI several years ago. Very scary. The car went to the dealers and the problem was found to be the butterfly full of carbon deposits.

Re: Throttle sticking open...

I've just had this and it was indeed the throttle cable sticking open, oumping may have allowed the spring to build up some momentum to pull through the sticky spot.
Check to see if your throttle is returning all the way, if it isn't unclip the cable and check if it's the throttle or the cable that's sticky.

Mine turned out to be the pivot that joins the two cables, inlet manifold had to be removed to get to it
