Maf, necessary ?

Hi guys, same old problem, my maf started playing up so I bought a second hand bosch maf as could not stretch to a new one.
Now after 2 months of trouble free motoring this maf is now playing up, so as a quick fix to get home i took off the connection to the maf and drove home. I was surprised to see that the car had perfect idle ( 900 to 1000 ) full power though out the gears, no lack or power drop off and as for speed the car never felt so fast.
The only down side is that I used a bit more petrol than usual, but that could be down to me pushing the car a bit harder.
My question is, if its going so well without the maf, do I need one?

The ECU is probably set to run far too rich if it can't see that the MAF is connected - rather than too lean which will eventually damage the engine. Apart from reduced MPG, accelerated inlet valve wear, general sooting of the exhaust valve side and probably an MOT failure on emissions - it shouldn't do any real harm.

However, if you have never had a MAF that works properly I think you will be suprised how slow it actualy is without one. Have you tried cleaning the sensor that sits in the centre of the airflow ?

You do need a MAF and it was a waste of time/money buying a second-hand one.

A new Genuine Bosch MAF is what you need.
