Hi - Sorry about the delay in replying - can't access from work
Right. Just asked my local garage to do whatever was necessary. Victoria Garage in Stockton Heath if interested. It involved pouring some stuff into the engine and running for 20 minutes and a similar thing with the cooling system. A low down cooling pipe was disconnected and a sludgy creamy flow ensued. After that it was a case of running the engine with the pipe disconnected and a running hose pipe going into the reservoir. Obviously the hose pipe had to keep up with the rate at which the water was coming out of the pipe
Eventually the water ran clear - job done.
The oil and sludge that came out was very, very black. I have done nearly 2,500 miles since and I checked the oil last night - still at max on the dipstick and still that nice browny glistening colour - like it has just been poured in.
All they charged me for was labour which at a massive £30 per hour is extortionate - NOT!!!
I also had the rear disks skimmed at the edges as sometimes I had a squeak at low speeds that disappeared when I pulled the handbrake on a notch and also weld my exhaust, which didn't work so I had to buy a new one - previous thread.
Now you can see why I didn't want this done on my new drive!
I just love my Alfa to bits and don't really want to part with it.
And still getting 420 miles on a tank going to Bracknell and back at 80MPH
