I wasn't in my car when mine went, the wife was, so can't confirm the noises, but it sounds like the bottom end is spinning and you have lost compression due to the bent valves which will have resulted.
The cambelt is behind the black covers on the left of the engine as you look at it .. they might be loose enough to see the belt, but someone will have to turn the engine over for you while you try and see if it is turning. It's probably lost teeth on the belt and is now stuck at the crankshaft gearing. So the crank turns on the starter, but the cams are not.
Hate to say it, but it sounds like an engine rebuild/swap.
How many miles had it done since the last cam belt change ... ???
