Help 156 Timing belt gone ??

Can anyone tell me what noise is made when a timing belt goes on a 156.
I think mine went the other night. I started my car and went back into the house to get a different c.d. When i got back to the car the engine started rattling like i have never heard before. It frightened me so i turned it off. A couple of seconds later i tried to restart the engine but it wouldn't start.
The starter engaged but the engine gave a really high pitched squeal and it turned really quickly for as long as i held the key.
Its been like that for two days. Under the bonnet there are no apparent signs of damage.
Any ideas anyone?
Suggestions greatly appreciated.

The engine turning over quickly without trying to start sounds like a classic case of belt failure, I'm afraid. To check you can get a compression test done, but its not looking good......

Difficult to describe the sound, but I always think of it as a whirring sound, sort of ziz, ziz, ziz....once heard never forgotten
