Just read this thread, though I d add my experince/2p worth :
FSDs are a development of Monroe Sensortrack dampers from 12 years ago, both are designed for use with standard springs as they have a valve inside that firms them up when the car enters a corner, fitting lower springs CAN make the ride very hard, IF the springs are TOO low, because the car will be permanently on the stiff setting. This is ONLY the case with larger, heavier cars (an M5 for example), it doesnt effect smaller cars (147,156 or GT for example) with a modest drop (25-30mm), hence why you can buy FSDs in a package with Eibach springs on Eibach's website..So its quite bizarre to hear that yours are too soft, as I d expect them to be too hard if the problem was using them with lowering springs.
I had Monroe Sensortracks on my Tipo (with std Tipo 16v springs) and I ve got FSDs with Eibachs (30mm drop) on my 147 JTD, also with GTA antiroll bars-I agree with Pud, its a very good combo, although can be a bit harsh over bumps sometimes. Also, as Pud says 147/156/GT are effectively the same car, so comparisons very relevant
I can understand steering being desrcibed as "vague" but not the ride-how can you have a "vague" ride ? !
If the car is too soft on FSDs and Eibachs, then either you wanna go lower and stiffer-60mm drop and coilovers or theres something seriously wrong with your car/the new springs/dampers (have heard of manufacturing probs with some FSDs). And if the steering has less feel than on the standard softer springs/dampers, that also points to problems somewhere-how could lower, stiffer suspension make the steering loose feel and lean more ? Doesnt make a lot of sense to me-have you checked your steering rack and or/antiroll bar bushes ?
Plus no one has mentioned the one thing that will improve the ride, handling AND steering feel just as much as springs/damopers-FIT LIGHTER WHEELS !-its never gonna drive that well when its dragging around 16+ kg of wheel per corner, reduce it to 8-10 kgs per corner and your ll be amazed at the difference it makes, pick wheels on lightness first and looks second.
