156 2.4 jtd Gerabox dosent want to come off

Ok. I finally plucked up the courage to change the clutch in my '02 2.4 10V JTD SW. Its mapped and the previous owner told me it would need doing sooner rather than later. Ive managed to nurse it along for 8 10 months but its a pain not being able to drive it the way its meant to be driven.
Thanks to trawling the treads here and a quick ebay purchase of a manual and off i went armed with the knowledge.
stripped everything off, unbolted all the bolts that needed (i sure there are none left around the bell housing etc) and started seperating the box from the engine.
This is where im stuck. It comes apart a little and then springs back.
Is this due to the pull type clutch/release bearing arangement in these and is it a case of brute force and engineering or is there a knack...
My sanity thanks you for you valued assistance.

You need to remove the clutch slave cylinder so that the clutch operating arm can swing fully back, then the gearbox will seperate easily enough........of course getting the cylinder out isn't the easiest job in the world......a great big circlip, and the the cylinder is often seized in the housing, - but it will come, honest!

Thanks to all replies.
Turns out the sleeve over the input shaft was slightly swaged out and preventing the release bearing from sliding fully out (contributing to the slipping no doubt) and for sure preventing the box from parting company with the engine. .
Brutal application of a pair of pry bars did the trick though the release bearing pulled the inner ring out of the old pressure plate and turned a few fingers inside out. They were for the bin anyway.
Its all back together now and going the way it should.
