2004 GT. Will I or won't I?

Hello all,

I recently had a test drive of 2004 GT 1.9d with 86k miles I'm considering buying.

First off, it was great to drive . Lovely responsive steering and plenty of torque from the engine.

I do have a few concerns and would like your opinion if I should go for it or not. One of my biggest gripes is the car is showing a bit of wear and tear. The previous owner was a GP so I assume he/she focused a bit more time on their patients rather than the car.

All the bodywork looks fine apart from a small dent on the bottom sill on the drivers side. There was obviously some equipment bolted onto the dash as there are 3 screws still in it which will need filling in. The top of the gear stick looks quite worn and the rear badge on the boot has completely worn. The leather interior, while it has no rips or tears, needs a serious hit of leather cleaner/conditioner. I found the clutch to be creaking and very heavy but I found a fix for this in another thread on the forum.

I am considering offering the seller a grand less than his asking price of £4965 as the car is by no means mint. Seller does seem quite genuine and has gone out of his way to answer any questions I have or get proof of work carried out on the car. It does have a FSH and both front upper wishbones were replaced last year. I am waiting confirmation timing belt was done too.

What do you think? Is it worth it? There are no other GT's in my price range at the moment to compare it to. Thanks for the advice.

I guess one worry would be the worn gear lever knob. It COULD indicate a driver that holds their hand on the lever all the time whilst driving. This can cause selector wear in some (all?) cars....

i guess the three screw holes were a mobile phone holder. I hate those fitments for exactly that reason (i suppose a GP may NEED that kind of fitment tho)

it needs a good looking over and yeah check the belt has been done (and the water pump!)

the clutch could well be release bearing / pressure plate related. Make sure it isn't if you're gonna buy it!

hth for starters...

On the test drive, I found no issues with selecting gears at all. Just the heavy clutch. There is a very good thread here on the forum that details the issue I experienced and the solution.

The previous owner must have had a lot of equipment in the car as it also has one of these multi sockets still installed. I found a local business that fills in hole in the dash at a reasonable price.

Yeah hopefully that's the cause. I only mentioned it because i've had a 2.0 TS 145 exhibit similar symptoms and that was a worn release bearing eating it's way through the pressure plate.

Just want ya to be sure before dropping the cash for it!

The 1.9 diesel is a great engine and the GT is a lovely car. DO find out about the belt (and particularly the water pump) though won't you.....

good luck with it!
