selespeed 147 5door accumulator

Hi people, I am a newbie and need lots of help.
147 selespeed 5door
It started when one day I got home parked the car in the shed and went inside,10 minutes later went to go back out and had no gears, half an hour later they were back and this started happening about once every 2 weeks , then while driving lost the gears again.
I took it to a local agent and got told that the accumulator is stuffed something about a hydrogen ball in it and that the pump is noisy and should be replaced aswell. The pump goes every time I go near the car. The quote is for $2500 which is aprox 800pound.
I have found an accumulator for 65pound new at Ebspares plus frieght.
Questions Is it possable to get a workshop manual in any shape or form
What is the dialog thingy that people talk about pluging in to the car
How hard is it to replace the accumulator
Do you think the problem is the accumulator
Do I need to replace the pump
How long should it take to change the accumulator
I am mechanicaly minded but have never worked on an ***** before.
ps my wife loves this car and if I break it she will break me so please help.

The symptoms of accumulator failure are usually that it will run the pump very frequently - ever gear change or so.

It's easily changed (has nothing to do with hydrogen) - just remove the battery and tray and you'll see it. Make sure the system is de-pressurised first though, and have some sele fluid handy to refill the system. It shouldn't take more than an hour to do, including adjusting the clutch rod length and re-calibrating it (not strictly necesssary, but when in Rome...).

For diags, a cheap VAG-COM lead and a copy of FiatECUscan will serve you well.
