Second hand Alfa 156 without logbook, a deal or not?
Currently I'ma student living in Sydney, Australia. I have been looking for a affordable vehicle to go to school/hospital recently. 2 days ago I found a lovely alfa romeo 156 for a good price from a private seller. However the owner would not give me the logbook, or service book no matter how you call it, instead of claiming it's lost. I feel like the seller is hiding information from me but it could be me being paranoid.
I'm sort of worried about the gearbox problem haunting this model. The car performs well on a brief road test, engine sounds good, and there is no other problem that I've found. An Alfa Romeo service provider is contacted who can inspect the vehicle for ~100bucks.
The car is 10 years old with 123,000km(meter) on odometer. Yes it is the infamous selespeed version.
My question is how likely the car would encounter any nasty problem that cost heaps to repair? Then, would an inspection by mechanics rule out existing/ potential problem?
I really have no idea about cars so please kindly reply.
