White smoke from the back of my JTD
I seem to have sporadic puffs of white smoke from the back of my '03 1.9 JTDm 16v. It seems to happen under hard acceleration, or when you put your foot down 3rd/4th at relatively low speed and the turbo starts to come on boost. It may happen in 5th and 6th too but its probably harder to see the smoke as you're going faster!
I had to replace the lower turbo hose 2 months ago (replaced with an Auto Lusso silicone item) and had some serious issues with smoke when I was waiting for the replacement item. The smoke is nowhere near as bad as that and doesn't seem sustained under acceleration, it just puffs out briefly and certainly isn't the plumes of smoke I had before. Likewise there are none of the rushing/wooshing noises from behind the glove box as there were before.
I had a replacement battery 10 days ago and I've only really noticed this since then (I wonder if it's always done this but I've only just noticed it. It's not like I'm driving around with a smoke screen behind the car!). The guy who fitted the battery managed to undo the plastic ratchet/jubilee clip that joins the 2 pieces of upper turbo hose next to the battery. I tightened this back up thinking this was the cause and air was getting in where it shouldn't, but this doesn't seem to have made a difference.
Power is seemingly normal (although when you think there is something wrong with the car your mind can make you think something is wrong) so I'm hoping I can rule out a problem with the turbo.
Engine temperatures are rock solid - around 80° - and the coolant level hasn't dropped so I'm hoping I can rule out the head gasket.
No engine lights or anything are coming on, but I do have the glow plug light flashing intermittently since the turbo hose gave out. Hoping a reset will cure this as it starts perfectly (is there a way to do this without a garage visit?)
So, am I worrying about nothing? I've seen a few posts on here that all seem to offer differing advice. With 2 potentially expensive things to go BANG I want to make sure I haven't got a big bill coming my way or if there is anything preventative I should be doing...
Thanks, as always any advice is much appreciated.
