I wouldn't expect to get a mint car with low mileage for a small sum of money, although a selespeed does seem to be slightly cheaper as a used buy, so no 98,000 wouldn't deter me, what would put me off is no service history/ mot.
I personally wouldn't buy any car for less than 2500/3000 and then expect the car car to need little or no money spending on it to bring it up to standard, so to me buying for 1000 is always going to be pot luck anyway.
Good luck.

No I just bought an 08 gt blackline with 107k on the clock. Motorway miles and full Alfa service history. I would actually prefer a higher milage motorway car than a low milage one that is all start stop town driving. As has been said if it has been well maintained and looked after it should give many more years motoring.

100K miles is no problem these days if car has been maintained - for the Alfa particularly the oil being regularly topped up and changed at the correct intervals, and the cambelt and tensioners changed on schedule (36K miles). Otherwise, for a grand as said above with any car you're going to be taking a bit of a chance......
