2000 model 156 couple probs

firstly, the headlights are dreadful i literally cant see at night without full beam, is there any common fault causing this.

2ndly the temp guage rarely goes much above 50c, if on idle it will rise to 90c no prob but when moving it wont rise hardly at all, heaters are not that hot when driving, 100% its not head gasket, i am guessing maybe a dodgey thermostat. any ideas.

Hi Tom and welcome to the world of "Alfa Ownership"!
Yes a stuffed thermostat sounds about right.
Common fault (bought mine in January and had the same issues).
I'm told it's an easy job on most 156's, but a pig on others.
Just do a search on here and there's loads of threads about it.
Just took mine back to where I got it from (independent garage) and 40 later, temp where it should be and nice warm toes!
(The price was a "special" as it had been stuffed when I bought it, I think the "stats" are around 50-60, then labour on top, usually)
Hope this helps!

Hmm the lenses are coated, and this coating can fade over time causing the lens to not look crystal clear, i mean they dip beams are not good anyway to be honest, the only things you can do is replace the H7 dips for osram night vision bulbs or something along those lines that give a much improved light output or do a HID conversion but i've been told by many people on this site that they will soon become illegal for MOT's so not worth it to be honest, unless you can get yourself a dodgy MOT
