Hi Guys

I have recently bought a nice (i hope) 156 2.0 tspark 99V it has done 83k service history alfa then specialist 2 owner.

My Question, if I may

It had a cambelt in 2006 at 58k. Should I replace it right now along with all the other bits like water pump and tensioner?

Yep. Sounds like a good idea - the timing belt interval is 36k (it's nearly done 30 since the last change), so perfect time to do the job.
Some would suggest renewing the variator too, but if it's not noisy I'd leave it - that's your choice.
You will also need to replace the balance shaft belt at the same time.

Yes, think you should. Advised change is 36k or 3 years. I would recommend changing variator too, even if it's not noisy now. If it gets noisy you'll need to replace cambelt again. Good luck and hope you enjoy 156 ownership!

*welcome and good purchase, hope you enjoy it! (check your oil regularly until you know its habits)

yes to belts! yes to water pump, upgrade it to one with metal impellers? maybe to variator

not to muddy waters but you could take a gamble on not doing the variator. Its your choice so just weigh up what everyone says

the variator noise only means its starting to fail - all this means is the timing doesnt change around 3k revs. this is not a problem, it would only slightly impact your economy if anything. And of course make a terrible noise at startup, but it wont be loud - it will slowly get louder over time. a good boot when standing every now and then should help prolong the life of it when it does start to rattle on start as I assume it gets a bit gunky with oil as it sits low??? so a few revs on the driveway would help flush it - I could be talking rubbish mind.

*mine started rattling just after I did my belts so I was a bit peeved but it didn't affect my econony or anything - I think there was a slight lump in the acceleration between 2.5-3k revs, thats all.

Alfa Romeo Servicing

"From 13/11/06 the official cambelt service interval on all 4 cylinder petrol engines of all ages was reduced to 36,000 miles (or 3 years - whichever is sooner)"

It would seem you are overdue a change. Get done ASAP.
