I managed to sort it out in the end!
I went for the "remove the whole strut approach", gazza82 provides some useful info on this forum. The benefits are that you do not remove the hub nut and the lower suspension went back together very easily. The problem was that I could not remove the circlip from the outer CV joint to slide the boot on, it is held in a recess and it is only possible to see the two ends of the clip - tried for ages with no joy, I wasn't doing anything wrong, it didn't seem that complicated but I couldn't get the bloody thing out! So I drifted off the end cap (jam jar lid type with out the screw) from the inner joint. Inside the inner joint there is another circlip - simple affair to remove, CV joint comes off then you change out the boots easily. I used Tie Wraps instead of the metal bands (still can't get the hang of those even though I bought new ones). Tips for the job: It's a messy job, I will always give something a go however next time I may just run it down to the local garage? I believe they just use a stretch tool for all their boots - I'm still scrubbing my nails!
