1.9 facelift headlight cleaning.

I have a 2004 1.9 JTD.

Whats the best way to clean / polish the headlights to get them like new? I don't want to scratch them, but at the same time don't want to spend a fortune on some product that is basically washing up liquid

They are( Uv protecting ) lacquered polycarbonate . The laquer will be knackered but can be removed or there's this 3M Headlight Restoration Kit to Restore Dull/ Faded/ Discoloured Headlights: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike
