Ok guys so my lovely Alfa 147 has started showing signs of the famous gear box issue yesterday when driving back from a friends I was struggling to engage 4th or even from 4th to third. Also the gear has been very wobbly but I understand this is an alfa characteristic!
Anyway I have read several threads and it appears everyone is saying either change the bushes or get a new selector plate; so therefore I have just been in touch with the dealer and bought a new selector plate £32.63 (not bad considering I just bought it from rip off dealer
Alfa workshop suggest removing swarf from the gear box for a non selecting 4th gear however I don't think this is the issue as the whole setup is just stiff as a brick!!
I searched high & low for a tutorial on how to change the plate or bushes & finally came across this: Alfa Romeo forum: 147 Stiff Gearchange Repair
so I thought I'd share with you guys if any if you want to do it yourself at home
I will be following the exact procedure & hopefully it will cure the problem, if not atleast I'll have a new plate & bushes
oh and I'll try the alfa workshop route too if this fails!!
My beloved mechanic didn't have a clue on the issue & suggested completely removing the gear setup and putting in new one circa £200!! Ouch! I trust him always but on this one I'll give it my shot first!
Wish me luck!!! Hopefully weather weekend will be good to let me have a crack at it!!
