water in Diesel indicator

My car failed it's MOT due to a weep of diesel from the sensor in the bottom of the fuel filter. So I tried to tighten it up and it broke, original item very slight force and it broke. So I rang the dealers and they wanted 35 just for the sensor! So I tried the local motor factors and they had a Fiamm item complete with a sensor for 18! So I fitted it and happy days, or so I thought!! For some reason every other time I get in the car I get water in the diesel on the dash for about 3 seconds with the warning bleep. Has anyone else fitted the Fiamm item to a 147 with a similar experience, or do you think I really have water in my diesel now?

I got fed up with the warning light coming on every now and again on my 156 2.4 JTD so I just unplugged the sensor. Never had a problem with it in over 100,000 miles.

Thanks for the replies, I might just unplug it as well. The genuine part has a reed switch and probably a floating magnet in it. The Fiamm sensor looks to be measuring resistance to the vehicle chassis through the fuel. Like they say, I guess you get what you pay for!! I am worried that if I buy the genuine sensor it probably won't work in the non original filter. So now the MOT pressure is off I might just invest in the genuine items.
