Sorry I haven't got a 147 so can't say for definate, but yes you should be able to see the coil spring in the wheelarch. Ideally, you need to jack it up and remove the wheel then check the spring carefully, sometimes they snap near the end so that at a normal glance it looks ok but if you look at the ends you might find a part that has snapped off and is just resting in the spring cup holder.
Not sure if the standard shocks are gas or oil, but if they are oil then you shouldn't see any on the outer body. When you bounce it, it should bounce up then return to the normal position without any more bounces, if it doesn't then the shocker is knackered. You shaould also replace in pairs!!
