Need help, trying to replace alternator

Hello, I've started with attempting to replace the alternator in my 156 2.0 '98 (petrol), and have run into some difficulties. I removed the rear enginemount ( think it would be called ) and disconnected the exhaust from the manufoil to gain access to it, and I managed to get it lose.
However the gap is not big enough to get the alternator out of, due to the (and this is where my english terminology is starting to fail) shaft coming out of the transmission. The actual thing pulling the right-front wheel around.

Do I have to remove this, in any case how? Or is there an easier way of getting the alternator out? I can't imagine the people putting this car together would make it this complicated removing and alternator...

Anyone got any experience with this?

You're english is pretty good! I managed to drop the alternator from my 147 jtd downwards but I think I've read where on your engine it has to go upward? Hopefully you will get a reply form a moe experienced member!?.
