Why should we have to put up with such crap components on these cars?!? My mates 124K mile Skoda has perfect door openers. Mates VW Passat on 84K miles, perfect doors. So why does my 68K mile GT creak and groan like an old banger?!?! Doing my head in?"
I don't think you can generalise like this. It is how many times a door is opened (and by whom), not mileage in this case. (Lots of long journeys are easy on this component). Also every service the door straps are to be greased. My sister had damage to her door strap but that was because it got strained in the wind. Say you got your car second hand, just one bad strain in it's past and the component is weakened. A good example is all the people who gave out about about the Mass meter over the years on Alfa's. They are Bosch and are common on most Audi's and VW's etc with the same failure rate. It is just that Alfa takes a bashing for poor quality because to it's late Seventies/early eighties poor build.
I have good friend with Audi's and VW's and have had plenty of breakdowns or issues.
SO yes just install new ones, it's worth it ....
