156 Facelift - Reverse gear "graunching"

2005 2.0JTS - is it an Alfa thing.....
All forward gears engage with no problems
When stationary (of course) engine at idle and I engage reverse, horrible extended graunching before gear is selected
Is this the norm ?
Damned irritating

No, but I often find it's not in reverse but neutral, which I believe is an 156 trait. It takes a bit more force than usual to be sure it's in reverse, but no crunching or anything unpleasant.

Tried declutching in neutral first?
