GT front suspension and steering woe
Got a bit of a knocking from the front end, assumed it was the ARB drop links as I've known they were wearing since I got the upper wishbones done a few months back. Fair enough, booked in to a trusted garage, expected to pay well under £200 notes for a job done.
Get a call back from the mechanic -problems relating to steering, tie rods had been 'unscrewing themselves' apparently. With the car up on the lift, I can see that there is a lot more wear throughout, which I understand is par for the course for a GT. What both myself and the mechanic are puzzled by is how the tie rods on the end of the steering rack are coming loose -basically two or three threads from breaking free! Very dangerous.
Investigation show that the very top bracket -the one that the whole kaboodle is fixed through, is very loose. I think it was number 16 on the assembly drawing. Absolute pain because EVERYTHING will need disassembly and removal to replace. A lot of labour.
So now I'm looking at £660 in parts and a hell of a lot of labour. The garage will do me the whole job, all in, for £1250. Ouch. The manager there is a decent bloke, and will allow me to split up the cost however I need to, providing the cost of parts is paid up front.
The thing that is puzzling me is just how did the loose top bracket end up 'unscrewing' the tie rods? Is this common? I know that wear throughout the suspension is typical, this thing practically eats wishbones! Thoughts?
