its possible to do the timing on any car without cam locks if you know what you are doing, it is however MUCH easier with the tools...I made my own out of hard wood for my e36 using the dimensions in the haynes manual.
using a timing gun and having some info on that specific engine, ie how many degrees btdc the ignition fires should get you spot on or very ,very close, I have used that method too, another good one is to cut the old belt down the centre and remove one half of it, line up the new belt tooth for tooth and then cut the old belt completely off and push the new one home...
all the above work well and I would happily use them dependent on the engine layout and if I have access to the cam locking tools.
