EGR and inlet manifold

Dear all,

I stripped my EGR valve out of my 20V as a precaution. Seems it was a good call as I had had no symptoms but the soleniod pin stuck in when I pushed it in. Stripped it down and all is now well. However, what surprised me was the amount of carbon in the inlet manifold. The swirl vanes fed from the EGR were almost completely blocked and I had to take off the 'throttle' body to get enough access to clean all the gunk out. Is this normal and what would happen if the EGR ports blocked completely? It certainly seems that the car was trying to blank the EGR off all by itself

However, the car drove absoltely no different after all that work so it can't be that crtical
