if its the same as the upper wishbone on a 166, the key is undoing the anti roll bar drop link, the strut then drops down low enough to lift the aluminium casting off the top (don't forget to undo the four nuts holding the strut top to the body in the engine bay (not the big one in the middle of the strut, the ones at the edge of it.)
I did exactly the same thing, i spent ages swearing at mine, then the next day undid the drop link, and the whole lot drops about a 8 inches lower, and the top just lifts off (separate the ball joint first - mine needed a little heat)
