Wheel nut question: Torque spec?
I just got a 2001 156sw. I took off the wheels once to inspect the brakes and just tightened them back on in the normal way. A few days later I pulled one wheel to replace the undertray and found the nuts to be disturbingly loose. I went around the car and found they all needed a bit of tightening. Today I had the wheels off again to put on the summer set I've acquired. Low and behold, they were loose again! Not falling off loose, but looser than I would expect.
I've been driving for almost thirty years and never had anything like this happen. Confession: I did spray some penetrating oil on the rusty threads, but I've always done this. There is rust on the wheel contact surface of the rotors (which will be replaced soon anyway), but this seems an unlikely cause. I didn't tighten with a torque wrench, but got one today to do the brake job, so I'll use it the next time. What torque setting should I use?
Has anyone else experienced this? I think I know how to change a tire - done it more times than I want to remember. I am not being a gorilla on these rather delicate looking rims, but I do know something about mechanics and metal, and I don't feel like I am undertightening.
