I don't often have the need to carry passengers in my car (156 20v Sportwagon). Recently I have taken a few long trips with two or sometimes three adult passengers. On acceleration I have noticed a vibration coming from the front end and it also comes slightly through the steering wheel. Feels like worn suspension rather than a transmission problem - any likely causes? Car is fine when I am travelling on my own.
Short of getting it on the ramps for a look that will say for sure either way I'd suggest you try to accelerate hard in 6th gear. If the vibration returns its likely to be one or both driveshafts. I would assume the heavy load is simulated by the high gear if it is the case - it's always under acceleration! I had the same in my 1.9 but it would only show over 70mph.
Tested again this morning (travelling on my own) - cannot get the car to vibrate as before. Went through the range of gears and accelerated hard in all gears including 6th as MARKO suggested (to high speeds) - no problems. Even accelerated from the lowest speed managable in every gear - all fine. As I mentioned above - this only happens with a full or almost full load of passengers. If it is the driveshafts (which will get me sooner or later) I'll take it on the chin - but it seems to be caused by the extra weight in the car - I realise this could put load on the driveshaft too - but is this likely?
