Ok, I think in the short term, i should have a look at this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...#ht_500wt_1156
It would be a good starting point. It ticks all the boxes mechanically, its just the mot coming up which concerns me a little.
Do you think something that appears to have been maintained so well (with recent brakes etc) will have too many issues at test time??
One major worry is the seller! Have a look at their feed back - they've had it listed once for 1150 quid, and sold it once for 900!
Hi Andy Ski, thanks for your comment.
So, an update. I've just got back from seeing the one above. Theres one or two issues here, but for some reason they're not worrying me too much. But you guys are the experts so i'll wait for your comments.
(this is the one which is on its third listing on ebay - i've spoken to seller about the situation here, and i've contacted the 2 who brought the car previously but didn't come through - their stories are all consistent)
First off, the car is wonderful (apart from the colour of course! Oh, and the towbar!). It sounds great too! Ticks over just on 1000 rpm when cold, dropping slightly when warm.
The seller lives in B-road central, so the roads were handy for listening for lumps and bumps from the suspension and rattling in the car - there were none! The body work is in good condition for the age, and the cat c was explained further and the repair seems faultless. Interior was very good too - all the buttons were working, the cruise worked, the a/c like ice. Overall very impressed.
Now the worrying stuff, which like i said doesnt seem to be worrying me too much for some reason.....
It has no service history! The book has been lost, never to be found!!
The current owner appears to be late 50's and a former mechanic - the car graveyard on his drive was testament to that! He's selling as he's just got a dog, that doesn't like being shoved in the boot of the alfa too much.
He claims he has topped up the oil every 1000 miles, and has completely changed the oil and filter every 3-4k miles.
He says he changed the cambelt around 1000 miles ago, as he couldnt be sure wen it was done due to the lack of service records. He's also shown me handwritten receipts (3 of) from the same backstreet garage for the following parts:
Receipt 1 - Cambelt
receipt 2 - brakes front and rear, discs front
receipt 3 - various suspension parts (from last july, after its mot)
These have all been installed by the seller. The brakes felt very sharp.
He says he uses the car daily, spending 60 quid a week on fuel with a bi-monthly drive to relatives in hertfordshire - so it's used to commuting type drives.
So, with all this in mind, i've come home and called the local alfa specialist to enquire as to whether theyve had this car in at all for anything - and they have!! :-)
2008 they had it in for a warranty recall (unknown parts - computer system doesnt say)
July 2009 they had it in for Cambelt, Phase sensor (but no waterpump :-/)
So, even if the guy didn't install the cambelt as claimed, its been done by main dealers at 77503 miles (car has 86k on now).
Thoughts and opinions peeps......?
