156 SportWagon : trailing arm bushes are shot

OK, had a knocking from the rear for a while. Car went in for a basic service yesterday and they had a look (local independent) and said the trailing arm bushes are shot, the ones that fit into the hub carrier.

They're quoting "roughly" 50 a side inc. parts and labour with a caveat that it could obviously go up if it turns out to be a bugger of a job.

Platts (AR dealer in Stoke) on the other hand have quoted me 115.66 fitted for both. Naturally I'm inclined to go with that as a firm quote.

Just wondering, (a) is that a good price from a dealer and (b) does anyone know of any independent AR specialists who may be able to better that?? Oh and what's the general view of poly bushes??

I take's me 45ish mins per side to do these bushes if thing come off ok...
The worry is that you have to remove the calliper and disc to do the job and if the discs or pads are shot then you will need them replaced too.

The dealer price seems reasonable (for a dealer); I'm guessing that's an hours labour plus the parts. It's a straightforward job if you have the correct tools.

The bushes have been modified to improve their longevity, and in this particular application, I personally don't think that "polybushes" are worth bothering with.

I put the polys in my saloon a couple of years ago and they seem to have been pretty good tbh. Certainly firmed the back up no end compared to the worn ones, but then they WOULD, wouldn't they!

I've got to change the actual arms soon as the bushes in those have gone - fluid's leaked out. So when I change those I'll check the hub bushes out and see what state they're in. That'll determine whether I go poly again or standard.

good prices for the job, btw!
