I would say "yes, go for it"
I had a 1999 156 2.0ts from new, kept it for 6 years with not a single fault, went like a rocket, looked like a million dollars, loved it to bits.....but got married, had kids and could'nt fit a pram through the small boot apature.
Went through a couple of other cars before I purchased my GT jtd. Compared with the 156 (petrol) it's not as quick granted, but in the real world it's much better (more lugging power, I know your's is better). I can get 640 miles to a tank (400 in 156) and fit loads of stuff in it as the rear seats fold (unlike the 156). Plus it's one of the most gorgeous looking cars on the road today.
As for reliability it's one of alfas best (on a par with the 166)
Get one and never regret, not !
