wheel and tyre query
So I have a 2000 156 sportwagon selelspeed. Bought it last weekend. Those of you who follow the board carefully may have already seen I have posted on fixing the airbag ECU (success) and the thermostat (fail for this weekend).
My new query is on wheels and tyres.
When I bought the car, I was so fixated on making sure that all the known faults were resolved on this car, and feeling comfortable about the selespeed, that I didn’t even kick the tyres properly.
Looking more closely, with time on my hands, see the photo below.
Because you can barely see it, that is a slight ding, and a hairline crack. The ding is so small that the wheel doesn’t feel out of balance. The crack I am less sure about. I’ve never had alloy problems before, so I wonder how quickly you might recommend I replace the thing? I wouldn’t race on it, but I am planning to drive a thousand miles through France at the end of April – do you recommend I replace it before then?
Point two: the tyres are the wrong size. Those wheels are 17”, and fitted with 205/45/17 tyres – profile is too low. No doubt that contributed to the ding. Also can’t help with the ride. And they’re a brand I've never heard of, rather than a good brand.
I’m kind of fixated on wheel weights – I have quite a bit of history with Suds and Sprints, where wheel weight makes a big difference. I’ve found that going up an inch in diameter will add a couple kg to the weight of the wheel, which has a noticeable impact on performance, handling and ride. Paying more for premium tyres on standard size wheels tends to give better handling and ride than going up an inch and putting low cost ‘performance-look’ tyres on.
So I think I want to go back to 16” teledials, and put some good 205/55/16 tyres on them. As Alfa alloys, I can’t imagine the teledials are light, but they’re likely to be strong, and they do look really good.
So my question here is – because I only recently moved to the UK, I’m really unsure of how to get a good deal on tyres. 16” teledials are easy to come by on ebay. Low cost, good brand performance tyres are also sold on ebay. If I did that, it is commonplace to go to a tyre shop and ask them to fit and balance tyres that I had bought elsewhere? Are there recommended tyre shops I can go to, to get a good deal on nice tyres?
And recommended tyre choices at a good price? I had Dunlop Sportmaxx SPs on my 164 in 205/55/16 size, and thought they were a great balance of handling, roadholding, ride and road noise. Not a cheap tyre, though. As I wasn't expecting to replace wheels and tyres, I'm looking to do it at as manageable cost as possible.
I’m in West London, Hammersmith and Fulham area.
