Alfa 147 cold start engine tapping

Hi all,

Hopefully, I'm just about to join the ranks of Alfa ownership. I'm looking to purchase a 147 2.0 Selespeed.

We saw one at the weekend, in great nick, with all the kit, but my only concern was a "tapping" noise from the top of the engine at the cold start. It was fine after a couple of minutes, but is this common with 147s? It's done just under 50k, has a full service history, but no cam belt change as far as I can see: the Alfa manual said that it should be checked at the 48k service (done at an Alfa specialist), and if OK, should be replaced at 72k. There was no record in the paperwork of it being changed.

It's from a dealer, so we'd get everything sorted before purchasing, but should this be a worry for me? I'm new to the car so don't really know what to expect!

Re: Alfa 147 cold start engine tapping

In Australia, Alfa has changed cam belt change to 60,000 kms or 36,000 miles or 3 years which ever is sooner. If it has not been changed under the above circumstances then it really needs to be changed as a cam belt break will likely cost thousands of pounds in engine damage.
The previous figure of 72,000miles or 5 years is unaceptable and belts will often break before then.

It is quite possible that the noise especially if it sounds like a diesel engine upon starting is related to the cam variator.
To fix a variator you are already removing the cam belt so..........belt change and tensioner change should be carried out.
However the noise could also be from the "tappets" and goes when oil pressure is correct.

I had a simlar problem the dealer replaced the camshaft variator which cured it,they said it was a common fault.

Had the car been standing for a while?? the tapping could just have been that the oil had not got back up to the tappets.

Re: Alfa 147 cold start engine tapping

I can second Stori's post.

My Bella is nearing her 60,000 Km mark and just past her 3rd brithday and I had the same noise (sounded more like an old Diesel than a petrol).

After a visit to a nice garage, they changes the cam belt, the spark plugs and all the other necessary servicing requirements for this stage (60k and 3yrs).

She now purrs like a kitten at low speeds and growls like a tiger at high revs....

Me be very happy indeed

Sounds like the variator. It should really be changed with the Cam belt which itself should be changed at 36k miles. I thought that the official belt change point had been changed to 36k miles as there were so many failures.
