'Whirring' noise in engine

This is just a query really, as it never seems to have affected my car negatively at all, but I've always wondered why a whirring noise picks up in the engine. It's normally just at standstill, and is pretty loud, especially from the outside. It's got more frequent recently, and I can hear it whenever I come to a standstill now. It picks up for about 5-6 seconds then dies off again, and sounds like a fan spinning really fast under the bonnet.

Anyone any idea what it is? As I said, it's never affected the car, but its a bit annoying.

One of those noises you need to hear "in the flesh" it would appear! But it COULD (just throwing it in there) be the water pump impeller getting warped? Not sure if it's a placcy one on the JTS....

Or it COULD be the cooling fans kicking in due to a radiator that's clogged up....

OR they could be kicking in for the aircon - they add cooling when it's on AFAIK (yes? no?)

Does it relate to a rise in temp?

Remove the auxilliary belt and then listen. If noise is still there needs more investigation.
If noise gone then its one of the components in the belt run.

That could be alternator, power steering pump, air con or any/all of the tensioners/guide rollers

Hey guys, cheers for the replies. I thought of it maybe being the air con earlier and experimented a bit but that wasn't conclusive.

My first thought was a cooling fan as it only happens when the engine heats up, but the temp never goes beyond the halfway mark on the gauge.

I experiment a bit with your suggestions and report back!
