JTD 20V - fix for notchy gearbox
I've been living with the car for a few weeks and decided I need to do something about the notchy/crunchy gearbox on my JTD 20V. I'm pretty convinced its the gearbox and not a dragging clutch or seized or badly adjusted linkage but I'm certainly open to suggestions. Basically, its not too bad on the first start of the day (though not good) and pretty good when fully hot but is a struggle to get it into first or second when I get back to the car after work. It 'feels' like the synchro is baulking me and will go in if pushed harder. Indeed, if I sit at the lights and go 4/3/2/1 through the box with the clutch down then it goes into first much easier. Clutch is lovely and light and bites OK with no sign of dragging.
I've done some searching and it seems replacing the gear oil with a reduced volume of Redline fully synthetic may help. The car is coming up to 110,000 so an oil change is clearly not a bad idea. Thus, the plan is to replace the oil and bleed the clutch. I'll also check cables and regrease linkages while I'm in there. Is there a specific adjustment procedure for the linkages? Hopefully those together will improve things a bit!
