When I got my 147, it had the previous owners details and a lot of bills (cam belt, alternator, that type of thing). Chased up the cam belt change and found it was done in Middlesbrough by one of those tyre garages. Rang and checked and it all checked out ok with a lot of other history on file (services).

Problem was when I recently had the cam belt changed by a couple of mechanics who are mates, major, major headaches with changing (I think it was either) the water pump or the variator as it had been tightened too much by the previous garage and was almost seized on!!!! Perserverance paid off though.

Ok car though, the supplying garage are reliable and I now have two cracking Alfa mechanics on hand if I get stuck with any jobs I can't do or don't have time to do.

When I was buying my 156, the history had a few gaps but this was down to lost papers from the previous two owners. The service book had all the stamps, so I called each dealer / specialist to verify what was done, any faults not rectified and could they send me copy invoices. Once everything checked out, I then bought the car with a fresh MOT from the dealer. It then went in to Go Italia for a full 72K Service + All Belts.

Personally, wouldn't trust a pen to paper remark of "cambelt done"... if there is no detailed invoice then IMO it never got done and isn't worth a monkeys toss... cambelt work needs to be done by specialist or main dealer as requires special locking tools and proper gauging for tensioner's etc... most general garage's will mark the position off with a pen.

A sort of family tree for our cars.
