Is It Worth The Trip To An Indie?

Hi guys,

In May my MOT is up on my 2002 147 and I was thinking of heading to either WAD or SimplyAlfas. However I wanted to canvass opinion on a few points:
  1. Is it worth taking it to an Indie as it's 2002 and getting on now (and maybe paying more than a local garage)?
  2. Should I get a service done on it too while I'm there (2 birds and all that)?
  3. Plan to have a rattle/vibration under hand-brake checked out, I assume any mechanic could do this though, or are Alfas really that specialist?

The closest place is Simply at about 22 miles, I don't really have any issues driving there (although I may need a courtesy car) but wanted to get some opinions on whether or not the Indie garage is really worth the extra mileage as it's an old'ish car?

Personally I'd say it's worth it. They're working all day, every day on Alfas so they are a lot more knowledgeable when it comes to common faults etc.

I took mine to my nearest indy, Alfa Workshop, for a routine service and mot, and was very impressed with the service. None of that ooh, it'll be expensive, we don't have the part, etc rubbish. Job done properly at a good price and in reasonable time. No made-up c**p about it'll need this or that doing, just honest advice. Unless it's something that means I cant drive the car, that's where it will go in future.

I would only go to an Indie for a specific job, clutch, cambelt etc, service is easy, rattle will be a heat shield come loose etc, but it depends on your garage, if it is the only Alfa they will ever see they will waste time looking for parts, the odd tool and measurements, whereas an indie will have all them to hand and just get on with it.

Whats the outcome...? have you used WAD's yet... ive been recommended by a good friend who drives Alfas, and i need my injectors looking at.

Im thinking WAD's... but Simply Alfas might be worth looking at too... Whos better thats the Question lol.

WAD's might give me the GTV they loan out while mines in too... would be fun for a test drive...

I think it depends what your other options are. Personally I wouldn't drive 22 miles to get an MoT done, but then I have an MoT station a mile from my house who I've been going to for years. For Alfa specific jobs like cambelts I'd be tempted to use a specialist but for run of the mill spannering tasks I wouldn't. It may be an Alfa but it's still a car. My local guy can have anything from Corsas to Rollers in for work so I doubt a 147 would phase him.
