Warm heating, cold temp gauge 156 jtd

Just purchased my second 156 a 2004 156 JTD Veloce (88k). First three day were great smooth, fast etc, then on the 4th day it wouldnt heat up then whe hit the motorway overheated and stopped. The recovery guy (an alfa owner ) said it was likely a head gasket problem, i have since looked and the top radiator hose has popped off so put it back on filled with water and away we go, however the heating blows hot yet the temp gauge doesnt move??????? Any clues. Thanks Carl

Ist thing that comes to mind is that you may have refilled with water but that an airlock has been created in the vicinity of the temp sensor. Had something similar in my 1st car (ford anglia) longer time ago than I care to remember. How long have you driven it for? Have you rechecked the water level? If there is an airlock eventually the gauge goes up and may show overheating as the water is not circulating as it should. Can't be certain that is your issue but worth a look.

Start the engine, undo the coolant filler cap and look for bubbles.
