In a lot of cases the red light means that the system is disabled because there is a fault somewhere - the passenger front seat wiring is a well known weak point.
Now there are two things that could be wrong here - 1) the cabling throw a fault when you first linked it up which has now gone or 2) the cabling is still throwing a fault.
Either way the only way to find out is with a laptop and one of the software systems (with later cars if the error is intermitant the error message is stored but the light goes out) - you need to clear the fault and if it stays away then you are okay if it comes back immeadiatly then you need to check the plug(s) (maybe put a cable tie round them to hold then together tightly) and then try to clear the error again.
If you were closer to Bedfordshire I could help but I am sure that there is a forum user near you with the software who can assist - try putting a message in the South East regional section.
